Born from Necessity, Built for Impact In December 2025, a coalition of development practitioners and entrepreneurs from Lesotho, South Africa, and Zambia recognized a critical structural gap in Africa's economic development landscape. While SMMEs constitute over 90% of businesses and employ the majority of the continen`s workforce, they operate in fragmentation, disconnected from markets, finance, and policy influence.
The Africa SMMEs Development Trust was established as a direct response a permanent, institutional vehicle designed not as another project, but as a sustainable platform for systemic change. Registered under the laws of the Kingdom of Lesotho, we combine deep local understanding with robust international governance

Africa SMMEs Development Trust is a pan-African trade support and facilitation institution focused on unlocking business opportunities across Africa and globally. We serve as a trusted intermediary between enterprises, governments, and investors, advancing trade expansion, enhanced market access, and inclusive economic transformation across the continent.
Our mandate is to catalyse private sector led economic growth in Africa by strengthening small, micro, and medium-sized enterprises (SMMEs), activating regional and continental value chains, mobilising sustainable investment, and building credible, high-impact institutional platforms.
